Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island Birding Tour Schedule

Red throated loon

Our bird watching tours are designed to take advantage of the great diversity and numbers of birds in the Oceanside area.

December-February: Due to the warm climate with little snow cover and a rich marine environment, many birds remain as residents or overwinter here. Whiskey Jacks are easy to find in the alpine and sea ducks are starting courtship.

March: The spring migration is underway, eagles and cavity nesters like wood peckers and nut hatches are preparing their nests. Herring gather to spawn attracting lots of sea birds.

April: Brant arrive by the thousands, along with many other water fowl feeding on herring. Ducks begin nesting around marshes and lakes. Eagles lay their eggs at the end of April.

May: Early may is a peak time for shorebird viewing. Eagle eggs hatch around the end of May.

June: Many of the sea ducks leave for mainland nesting lakes. May to July are good times to see young owl families as they hang out in a small territory around the nest. Listen for the squawking and other strange sounds the young produce or for a mob of crows or jays.

July: Many birds are nesting and raising their young. Its a great time to see eagles tending their young.

August: Fall migration begins with night hawks, swallows and shorebirds. Eagle young leave the nest by mid August and the eagle migrate to large salmon rivers to feed for a couple of months.

September: The fall migration is in full swing and there are many new shorebirds and sea birds in the area. The owls and hawks are also migrating making for a very exiting birding month.
